The Garden.
In the long, narrow space behind their home, Anne and Edward together created the garden. Anne early on experimented with vegetables, then flowers and the garden's design. Edward constructed the garden framework, frequently recycling interesting structural items he salvaged from customers along his U.S. parcel post route. He enclosed the garden in a fence discarded by Randolph Macon Woman's College, and used massive turned posts he acquired as supports for a grape arbor and wisteria pergola that divided the garden into “rooms.” This 1937 image reveals a stylish, sophisticated cottage garden, reflecting Anne's original and creative garden palette, and a design that terminates at the focal point of a pond with two fountains.
