Cheekpiece
—complete
left proper cheekpiece, or earflap, was part of a
helmet probably a burgonet type.  They vary in shape but all have the rivets for
attachment at the top and the flair at the bottom, which may be wide or
narrow.   Although whole helmets seldom survive and are therefore rare in
Virginia collections, several of these burgonet cheekpieces have been
found and are in the DHR collections.

This example was recovered  from Jordan’s
Journey, a 17th-century settlement site in Prince George County near
Hopewell, Virginia.
