Dedication of Historical Marker Samuel Wilson Crump in New Kent County

This state historical marker that recalls the political career of Samuel W. Crump, among the first African Americans elected to public office under the state’s 1902 Constitution, which disenfranchised many black voters.

The dedication and unveiling ceremony for the marker begins at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 15 at the sign’s location at the New Kent County Courthouse in the village of New Kent. The public is welcome.

Speakers will be members and friends of the Crump family including son, Elton Crump, and daughter, Willie Crump Anderson, followed by remarks from county administrator Rodney Hathaway, county supervisor Patricia Paige, the county’s NAACP chapter president Burrell R. Pollard, the office of Congressman Bobby C. Scott, and DHR marker program historian, Jennifer R. Loux. The New Kent County Board of Supervisors sponsored the marker.
