Periwinkle Cottage in Albemarle County is a one-and-a-half-story, five-bay, Colonial Revival-style dwelling built in 1938–39. Noted architect Marshall Swain Wells designed the house, which borders the Farmington Country Club golf course just west of the city of Charlottesville. Wells was known as a residential architect who could prudently renovate historic properties, such as the Farmington Clubhouse, and design newly built houses that respect historic architectural styles. Periwinkle Cottage is an excellent example of the Colonial Revival style with its exterior and interior decoration and center-hall plan. And it reveals Wells’s great skill at adapting designs to client’s wants and needs. The house is modeled on the outbuildings at the Governor’s Palace in Colonial Williamsburg, and it is sited to take advantage of views of the golf course and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although a few alterations and additions have been made to the Periwinkle Cottage, they are of congruous design, materials, and workmanship to the original building.
