Sydenstricker School, in Springfield, was the last one-room schoolhouse built prior to school consolidation in Fairfax County, as well as the last operating one-room schoolhouse in the county when it closed in 1939. The current building was constructed in 1928, replacing an earlier school on the site, which had burned. In 1954, the Upper Pohick Community League—the oldest community association in the Springfield area, and one of the oldest in Fairfax County—purchased the building from the county, and it has since owned and maintained the schoolhouse. Except for a few changes, the Sydenstricker School building remains architecturally intact.
