An eye-catcher for an ever-constant stream of motorists on both Interstate 81 and U. S. Route 11 in Frederick County, this ambitious residence and its capacious barn are a celebration of late-Victorian architectural verve. The house was begun in 1883 for Charles W. Heater, a Frederick County farmer and businessman. Heater added the Monte Vista property to the original Heater farm, Cedar Grove, scene of the Civil War battle of Cedar Creek. With its bulk counterbalanced by its lively roofline, including a striking dormered tower, Heater’s mansion exhibits the bravado and eclecticism that are hallmarks of the period. The character of the façade was changed ca. 1942 when a two-story Tuscan portico replaced the original porch. The large bank barn, also built in 1883, is made conspicuous by its tall cupola.
