Fieldstone foundations, well remnants, and chimney bases of various structures mark the arrangement of a grange occupied from the mid-1700s into the 1800s, now situated on a peninsula of the John H. Kerr Reservoir. One domestic structure, partially eroding into the reservoir, is marked by two brick chimney bases. Within the central area is a dressed-stone foundation of a barn. Nearby a brick-lined cellar and two chimney falls remain from a mid-1700s domestic structure, one of the region’s earliest identified domestic sites. Scattered about it are four brick and stone chimney bases probably of outbuildings. The artifact frequency and diversity at Newman Point are adequate to address questions of social status and frontier market access. The complex is on John H. Kerr Reservoir property, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
