Along the banks of Big Cedar Creek near its junction with the Clinch River, these two sites contain Indian artifacts dating from 8000 B.C. to A.D. 1600. Excavations at Daugherty’s Cave show deeply stratified cultural deposits containing stone projectile points and tools, ceramic potsherds, unusually well-preserved bone and skull fragments, and hearth features. The adjacent Breeding site contains remains from the Early Archaic period (8000-6000 B.C.) that are rare in Daugherty’s Cave. Future investigation of both sites should provide contrasting information on Indian lifestyles at various periods in both rockshelters and open habitats.
