The Flanary archaeological site contains stratified deposits dating to the Archaic and Late Woodland periods of Indian settlement. Well-preserved Archaic period deposits (8000 to 1000 B.C.) occur rarely in the western portion of the state, and the site’s Late Woodland period remains (A.D. 800-1600) overlying these deposits could provide significant data for regional studies on Indian subsistence and settlement. Shown is a ca. 950 A.D. Late Woodland squash effigy vessel found there. The presence of artifacts at the site relating to the Indians of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina is valuable in documenting the interactions of Virginia Indians with their neighbors to the south.

Many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and are not open to the public, however many are visible from the public right-of-way. Please be respectful of owner privacy.
