The Elizabeth Iron Furnace is representative of the importance of the iron industry in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia during the nineteenth century. Set along Passage Creek in the northern entrance to the Fort Valley in Shenandoah County, the furnace reflects the nationwide trends in furnace construction during this time period. It was built in the plan common to the early nineteenth century, and later altered in an attempt to compete with more modern iron production methods.
