Charlottesville, the home of Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia, is one of the most historically significant cities in Virginia. The Charlottesville Multiple Resource Area nomination form encompasses the entire municipal limits of the City in a comprehensive approach towards preservation.  This multiple property document (MPD) was drafted in order to facilitate the listing of up to 80 buildings and two historic districts to the registers. The structures and districts included in the Charlottesville Multiple Resource Area nomination represent a cross section of all the City’s historic periods, from the founding of Charlottesville in the 1760’s through the advent of the automobile and the impact it had on the City’s expansion. Also included are buildings that have played an important part in the history of Charlottesville’s black community. Consideration for listing under this cover document was given to buildings or districts associated with historic persons or events, with a leading architect or master craftsman, and with sites or buildings of cultural significance.

Many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and are not open to the public, however many are visible from the public right-of-way. Please be respectful of owner privacy.
