The 2022 Martinsville Historic District Boundary Increase expands the existing Martinsville Historic District, which was originally listed in 1998.  The expansion areas are primarily located to the south of the original district, with three small expansion areas also included on the district’s north side. The expansion includes the historic main street commercial corridor of the city of Martinsville.  The Boundary Increase also incorporates mid-20th century growth and redevelopment areas in and around Martinsville’s historic core. Several buildings in the Martinsville Historic District Boundary Increase are also associated with prominent local architect J. Coates Carter and the Roanoke, Virginia-based firm of Smithey & Boynton.

Many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and are not open to the public, however many are visible from the public right-of-way. Please be respectful of owner privacy.
