First Baptist Church, located in the Newport News Downtown Historic District, was constructed in 1902 and, after it burned in 1906, was rebuilt in 1907 using the original plans. The building is an excellent example of Romanesque Revival architecture built in rough-faced pink granite with large, arched entrances and a general sense of mass and weight. The architect for the First Baptist Church, Newport News was Reuben H. Hunt, a Georgia native who set up his architectural practice in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Hunt was a prolific architect, noted for his public buildings throughout southern America. First Baptist Church is one of eight churches by Hunt built between 1896-1910 in Virginia alone.
