A departure from the tight town-house development of the surrounding Museum District neighborhood in the city of Richmond is this distinctive, tree-shaded block of four freestanding houses in the 2900 block of Grove Avenue. Although the easternmost house is a more conventional turn-of-the-20th-century dwelling with Craftsman overtones, the remaining three form a trio of highly individualized interpretations of the Queen Anne style with the flavor of suburban villas. Faced with gray granite, each house has a lively outline with angled projections and a corner tower. Although their architect remains unidentified, they are among Richmond’s most interesting examples of late- Victorian architecture. Adding to the Twenty-Nine Hundred Block Grove Avenue Historic District’s fanciful quality are the ornamented wooden carriage houses behind the main dwellings. Both 2911 and 2915 Grove Avenue were sympathetically converted to doctors’ offices in the 1980s and then became the property of the neighboring Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The four properties that make up the Twenty-Nine Hundred Block Grove Avenue Historic District are included within the city’s West of the Boulevard Historic District.
