St. Christopher’s School exemplifies the efforts by dedicated individuals and religious institutions to broaden the availability of quality education and to foster Christian principles in the youth entrusted to their care. It was founded in 1911 by noted educator Dr. Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne. The picturesque frame buildings that remain from that era are camp-like facilities typical of many such institutions. The more urbane brick structures from the second quarter of the 20th century show an affinity with preparatory school and collegiate architecture typically found in East Coast states. The informal combination of architecture and pine-shaded campus in the near West End of Richmond has been carefully nurtured over the years.
