Located in Chesapeake, the Warden Family Home, a two-story wood-frame dwelling, was probably built during three separate stages from the late 18th through the 19th centuries. The property features four agricultural outbuildings including a large barn. While the City of Chesapeake has developed rapidly to the south since its incorporation in 1963, the Warden dwelling is still located in a relatively rural setting. The property was originally part of a 17th-century plantation that consisted of 2,500 acres of land while under the James family ownership. Sold to William Warden, a successful farmer in the late 17th century, the property was later deeded to Warden’s heir Elizabeth Tabb. The house may have served as a hospital during the Civil War. The Warden Family Home remains today a rare example of 18th- and 19th-century vernacular architecture in Chesapeake.
