Built in 1847-48 for state delegate Thomas J. Michie, this well-mannered Greek Revival dwelling, one of the earliest houses on Staunton’s East Beverley Street (in the Gospel Hill Historic District), also has been the home of Claiborne Rice Mason, a civil engineer; John Echols, founder of the National Valley Bank; Alan Caperton Braxton, a leader in the establishment of the State Corporation Commission; and Henry Winston Holt, chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. With its brick construction, deck-on-hip roof, and wide plain entablature, the Thomas J. Michie House typifies the conservative, solidly proportioned structures favored by local builders working in the Greek Revival idiom. A contrast to the clean lines is the delicately detailed Grecian-style iron railing topping the porch.
