Hayden High School in the city of Franklin was built in 1953.  It replaced an overcrowded, African American high school building, that had been constructed in 1906 and was in poor condition. For proponents of school segregation, a fiercely contested issue in Virginia and elsewhere in the U.S. at the time, the new Hayden High School building represented a modern “separate but equal” educational facility for African American students. In 1970, the school was desegregated as a junior high school. Hayden High School was closed in the 1980s and has remained vacant since that time.
