All visitors to DHR’s headquarters and offices in Richmond are now required to provide a photo identity card (e.g. driver’s license, state employee badge, etc.) at the main desk, where all visitors are required to sign in.

 The Archives and Library are closed Friday and Monday and on state holidays. No appointment is necessary to visit.

The Department of Historic Resources’ Headquarters in Richmond maintains the Commonwealth’s collection of data on historic structures, historic districts, and archaeological sites. Organized by city and county, this information, contained in 170,000-plus unique files, includes resource evaluation forms, photographs, maps and drawings, and is available for the public to view free of charge.

The department’s research library is the principal repository for Virginia survey and archaeological reports. The reports do not circulate but are available for use by the public in the library.

Archaeological Collections

Hours: 8:30 a.m.– 12 noon and 1 p.m.–5 p.m. weekdays. The Study Collection is closed on state holidays.

  • Study Collection: DHR keeps an open collection of artifacts representing specific time periods, areas of the state, and artifact types for viewing and consultation by researchers.
  • Main Collection: Artifacts from more than 800 archaeological sites throughout Virginia are stored in the state Curation Facility. These collections, from all time periods, are also available for research and study by appointment.
