Glendale Farm is an antebellum farm complex set in the pastoral landscape of northwestern Clarke County. Its unusually large-scale brick farmhouse was built ca. 1847 for Archibald Bowen. The interior preserves distinctive, provincial Greek Revival woodwork. An original kitchen/laundry outbuilding stands nearby. An important feature of the property is a rare Appalachian-type double-crib log barn. This impressive rambling structure is composed of massive timbers employing V notching. Bowen is said to have been a Union sympathizer, which if true, might explain why the barn was not destroyed during the Civil War when Union troops obliterated nearly all other barns in the Shenandoah Valley. Although no fighting took place here, the house served as a field hospital for both sides. Several other early farm buildings remain on the property.
