In a bottomland field of the Elm Hill plantation, the Elm Hill site preserves stratified deposits dating from the Late Archaic through Late Woodland periods (2500 B.C.-A.D. 1600). Scientific study of these deposits would contribute significantly to the limited data currently available about this portion of the Roanoke River. Late Archaic projectile points and flakage have been discovered in the lowest test level of the site. Multiple Woodland-period occupation is denoted in pit features, hearths, and human burials. These features have both dense concentrations of ceramic artifacts and well preserved animal bones and shellfish remains. The Elm Hill site may be the last intact stratified bottomland site in the area since other potential sites have been inundated by Buggs Island Lake and Lake Gaston.
