The continuity of human occupation in Virginia prior to European settlement is vividly apparent in this quarry site along the mountain stream Big Run. Covering about 1,400 square meters, this site has yielded huge amounts of stone debris typical of a prehistoric, Native American quarry site. The site was the largest and most intensively used quarry located within the Shenandoah National Park and contrasts with other quarry sites in the sheer amount of debris present. Projectile points found here date to the Middle and Late Archaic periods (ca. 5500-100 B.C.).
Many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and are not open to the public, however many are visible from the public right-of-way. Please be respectful of owner privacy.
