NRHP Reference Number 85000399

The S.S. John W. Brown is one of only two remaining, fully operational Liberty ships that participated in World War II.  The Liberty ship represented the design solution that filled the need for an emergency type of simple, standardized cargo steamer which could be mass produced cheaply and quickly by assembly line methods and easily converted to individual service needs.  At the time of S.S. John W. Brown’s listing in the National Register, it was berthed off Mulberry Island as part of the James River Reserve Fleet.  It is now berthed in Baltimore Harbor, and it was listed in the Maryland register in 1997.
